  2. Beginner Level 2 — Mid-level work. Build on Level 1 by adding the transitional movements for each pose. A blend of work on the ground and in the kneeling position.
  3. Beginner Level 3 — Starting to stand. Add to what we learned in Levels 1 and 2 and start to stand.

Origins and philosophy

Yoga originated in ancient India over 2,500 to 5,000 years ago, with roots in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. The term “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to yoke” or “to unite,” symbolizing the union of body, mind, soul and universal consciousness. Classical texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali define yoga as the cessation of mental fluctuations, emphasizing self-discipline, meditation and liberation from suffering.

02

Practices

Yoga encompasses a wide range of practices, including:

  • Asanas (postures): physical exercises that improve strength, flexibility and balance.
  • Pranayama (breathing techniques): controlled breathing to enhance energy flow and mental clarity.
  • Meditation and relaxation: techniques to calm the mind, reduce stress and cultivate self-awareness.
  • Ethical and spiritual practices: principles like non-violence, truthfulness and self-discipline guide personal growth.

Types of yoga

Modern yoga has evolved into various styles, each emphasizing different aspects:

  • Hatha yoga: focuses on basic postures and breathwork, suitable for beginners.
  • Vinyasa/flow yoga: combines movement with breath in dynamic sequences.
  • Restorative/yin yoga: gentle, slow-paced practice for relaxation and stress relief.
  • Hot yoga: performed in heated environments to enhance flexibility and detoxification.

Benefits

Yoga offers a holistic approach to wellbeing:

  • Physical: increases flexibility, strength, balance and posture.
  • Mental: reduces stress, anxiety and mental chatter, promoting calmness and focus.
  • Spiritual: encourages self-awareness, inner peace and connection to a higher consciousness.
  • Community and lifestyle: fosters social connection, mindfulness and a sense of purpose beyond individual practice.
